Inroduction

Tribhuvan University, founded in 1959 AD, is the first university and the pioneer institute of higher education in Nepal. It is named after late King Tribhuvan, the father of the nation. It was only after the establishment of Tribhuvan University that good higher education within the country was available to the common Nepali people.

The infrastructure of physical development of Tribhuvan University was built at Kirtipur where its foundation stone was laid in 1958. Five kilometers to the south-west of the capital, the university is situated on the gentle slope of a fertile land that descends from the city of Kirtipur to River Bagamati. Today, TU Memorial Hall, Central Offices, Central Academic Departments, Central Library and Research Centers are located in its premises.

The basic objectives of the University are:

  • To produce skilled manpower essential for the development of Nepal.
  • To preserve and develop historical and cultural heritage of the nation,
  • To accumulate, advance and disseminate knowledge, and
  • To encourage and promote research in arts, science, technology as well as in the vocational fields.
